97pts James Suckling

A restrained wine with aromas of eucalyptus, milk, mint, cedar and Mediterranean herbs. Full-bodied with velvety, ripe and elegant tannins. A lot of meatiness on the palate, with a tobacco aftertaste. Freshness up to the meaty and savory finish. Cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

95pts Wine Advocate

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the Michele Satta 2023 Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia is fermented and aged in barrique, with 40% new oak. This marks the first vintage of Piastraia produced without Sangiovese in the blend, signaling a notable stylistic evolution for the wine. The 2023 release (with a total of 26,000 bottles) shows sweet fruit notes of blackberry preserves backed by lightly integrated spice and smoke. Delivering terrific balance and poise, this wine represents a confident and successful effort from one of Bolgheri’s founding winemakers.

94pts Jeb Dunnuck

The 2023 Piastraia pours a deep, saturated red hue and opens with a brooding aromatic profile of licorice, olive, toasted cedar, dark chocolate, and black cherry. Full-bodied yet without heaviness, it shows plush, velvety tannins and a well-integrated structure that carries through the long finish. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, this wine has evolved stylistically into a more classic Bolgheri expression. On a second tasting, it reveals even greater refinement and complexity, with impressive depth balanced by a sense of weightlessness. Drink 2026-2046.

Winemaker Notes

It is aged for 18 months in barriques and at least for 24 months in bottle and it expresses itself with notes of fruits jam and Mediterranean spices, noble woods and balsamic herbs. On the palate is structured, full-bodied, balanced and very persistent.

About the Wine

In ‘91 Michele planted the first vineyard with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah, with the aim of indulging both the established great expression of Bordeaux grape varieties in Bolgheri, both the all-Tuscan elegance of Sangiovese and the all-Mediterranean complexity of Syrah. It is the first wine in the territory to use the Bolgheri Rosso designation. From 2012 it becomes Bolgheri Rosso Superiore, as the vines have now reached sufficient age to express all their complexity. As of the 2019 vintage, Syrah is no longer part of the blend.

Grape Varietals: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 13% Sangiovese, 7% Cabernet Franc
