91pts Decanter

An impressive wine from Illy-owned Mastrojanni. Dense, rich and structured with lots of potential to develop in bottle. At the moment it dazzles with its concentration but after a year or two in the cellar this should start to drink really well. Aged in French oak and concrete, this is a little more plush and rich in style than more traditionally styled Rossos, with toast and darker tones to the fruit, but there’s depth and weight, too, with abundant black cherry and dried blackberry supported by smoky oak.

91pts Jeb Dunnuck

A bright ruby/red color, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino is spicy and floral with notes of wild raspberries, nutmeg, forest floor, and crushed roses. Medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, it offers fine tannins, even acidity, and a clean, mouthwatering finish.

91pts Wine Advocate

The Mastrojanni 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a lovely, informal wine with just the right level of Bing cherry and pomegranate to give extra lift and energy to the bouquet. It proceeds over the palate with mid-weight intensity, good balance and sweet fruit flavors. Pull the cork with your next take-out Italian meal.

90pts James Suckling

Intense notes of ripe blackberries and pressed flowers like roses and violets. Light- to medium-bodied with dusty yet ripe tannins, ripe jammy fruit character and juicy acidity. A bit more austere at the end.

Winemaker Notes

The 2022 season started with a cool, dry winter and normal budding. The rainy spring allowed an even vegetative development. The summer period was dry and warm. Beneficial rainfall in mid-August allowed the grapes to ripen regularly. In September, cool, sunny days allowed the grapes to complete their ripening, accumulating great aromatic and polyphenolic potential.

Blend: 100% Sangiovese (Brunello)
