This Harvey Brother's distillery, dating from 1881, was considered state-of-the-art at the time. Unlike other Islay distilleries, it did not develop from old, unused farm buildings. This innovative legacy continues with the modern Bruichladdich Distillery, which prides itself on its efficient design and sustainable distilling practices.
On December 19, 2000, a group of private investors bought Bruichladdich to bring it back to life. Between January and May 2001, the whole distillery was dismantled and reassembled, with the original Victorian décor and equipment retained (such as the original 'open 7-tonne mash-tun' — one of the few still in existence). It is built around a large, spacious courtyard from stone from the seashore.
Head Distiller Adam Hannett has individually selected casks to showcase the classic, floral, and elegant Bruichladdich house style. The Classic Laddie is made from 100% Scottish barley, trickle distilled, and then matured for its entire life in premium American oak by the shores of Loch Indaal.
Nose: The bouquet and cleanliness of the spirit are brilliant. Opening with barley sugar and a hint of mint before leading into notes of freshly cut wildflowers: buttercup, daisy, meadowsweet, myrtle, primrose and cherry blossom.
Palate: The palate entry is refined and refreshing, with sweet oak and barley arriving together. The fruits from distillation drift in on an Atlantic breeze and pop on the tongue like champagne bubbles. A combination of ripe green fruit, brown sugar and sweet malt brings closure.
Finish: Unforgettable! Its best enjoyed in good company, you just don’t want the evening to end. It brings warmth to the heart and soul.
