17 years in American oak. Spanish staves from northern Spain. A final finish in South American teakwood. The most geographically ambitious Boss Hog release.

WhistlePig Boss Hog VII: Magellan's Atlantic takes its name and concept from Ferdinand Magellan's first recorded circumnavigation of the globe — a journey that crossed continents and oceans in pursuit of the unknown. The whiskey does the same. After 17 years of maturation in American oak, the rye encounters new Spanish staves from the mountainous forests of northern Spain — a wood the description calls "nearly impossible to tame" for its density and resin content. The journey then continues to a finish in South American teak, an exotic hardwood with no precedent in mainstream American rye production.

The result is single barrel, bottled at proof between 105.1 and 107.8, and unlike anything else in the Boss Hog lineup. The 17-year base brings a structural complexity and age-depth that the younger editions cannot match; the multi-continent wood treatment layers on aromatics that span cinnamon, allspice, maple, vanilla, cloves, and dark chocolate in a spirit that genuinely rewards time and attention.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep amber with warm mahogany tones from the exotic wood finishing.
  • Aroma: Intensely aromatic — cinnamon sugar, allspice, maple, and toasted wood, with creamy vanilla, roasted almonds, and a touch of ground espresso emerging with time.
  • Palate: Bold and complex — spicy cloves, sweet brandied cherries, baking spices, charred oak, sage, and dark chocolate.
  • Finish: Everlasting — cinnamon, oak spice, and a gentle warmth that lingers long after the last sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does Boss Hog VII compare to Boss Hog VI (Samurai Scientist)? Boss Hog VI is aged 13 years with a Japanese Umeshu cask finish and koji fermentation — its differentiator is the East Asian ingredients and technique. Boss Hog VII is aged 17 years — four additional years — with a multi-continent wood program from Spain and South America. VII has greater age-depth; VI has a more exotic flavor profile.
  • What is South American teakwood? Teak is a tropical hardwood grown primarily in South and Southeast Asia, though South American varieties have been cultivated for their density and durability. In cask finishing, teak imparts exotic resinous, spiced, and woody notes not found in American or European oak — giving Magellan's Atlantic a genuinely distinctive character.
  • Why 17 years for Boss Hog VII? WhistlePig selects the age for each Boss Hog release based on barrel development rather than a fixed target. At 17 years, the base rye has reached a structural depth and integration that younger rye cannot match — making it the oldest Boss Hog released to that point.
  • Is Boss Hog VII a limited release? Yes — all Boss Hog editions are single barrel, produced in strictly limited quantities. Once sold out, they are not restocked.
