The Balvenie 25 Year Old Rare Marriages is a flawlessly crafted Speyside single malt in which Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE — the longest-serving malt master in the Scotch whisky industry — brings together individual casks matured in Traditional American and European Oak into an incredibly intricate and balanced TUN marriage that exemplifies the art and skill of single malt TUN marriages, hinting at the most sought-after Balvenie flavours: bold vanilla oak, crystallised ginger, and sweet runny honey.

The Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Speyside has been owned by William Grant & Sons since 1892. David C. Stewart MBE’s tenure as Malt Master spans more than five decades — the single most experienced active malt master in the entire Scotch whisky industry. The Rare Marriages TUN marriage at 25 years applies Stewart’s most refined cask selection skills to the combination of American oak (vanilla, caramel, and tropical fruit character) and European oak (dried fruit, spice, and warmth) in a specific TUN marrying process. The Tun — a large wooden vat used for marrying individual casks before final bottling — allows the different cask characters to integrate more fully than bottling directly from individual casks would permit. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TUN marriage in whisky production?

A Tun is a large wooden vat used to marry individual casks before final bottling. Rather than bottling directly from individual casks, the selected casks are vatted together in the Tun for a period of marrying time — allowing the different oak characters to integrate and harmonise more fully. David Stewart’s expertise in identifying compatible casks for TUN marriages over his five-decade tenure is considered one of The Balvenie’s most distinctive production skills. Limited allocation.
