On the edge of the UNESCO-protected Neusiedlersee National Park, where Austria meets Hungary on the Pannonian plain, the Michlits family runs one of the most genuinely integrated biodynamic farms in Europe. Meinklang is not simply a winery — it is a complete agricultural organism: Demeter-certified, self-sustaining, and guided by anthroposophical principles that extend from the vineyard into the community. A herd of 300 Angus and Aubrac cattle provides natural fertilizer, closing the nutrient loop. Ancient grains grow alongside the vines. A Waldorf school was founded nearby. And in the cellar, Werner and Angela Michlits make wines of striking authenticity — spontaneous fermentation, concrete egg vessels, unfined, unfiltered, minimal sulfur.
Mulatschak — Austrian slang for party — is their most playful expression, and it earns the name. A blend of Welschriesling, Pinot Gris, and Traminer, each given 5 to 7 days of skin maceration before fermentation in stainless steel, it arrives naturally hazy under crown cap with the energy of something genuinely alive. The nose is lightly aromatic: apricot, goldenberry, white peach, and a gentle yeasty warmth. On the palate it is textured and softly tannic — not a heavy orange wine, but a graceful one, with bright acidity and a finish that makes it remarkably easy at the table. Serve lightly chilled with or without food.
Biodynamic farming, crown cap energy, and the Pannonian plains in a glass — Mulatschak is the party wine that doesn’t compromise.
