20 years in oak. One of the oldest age-statement tequilas commercially available anywhere — Julio Gonzalez Garcia Extra Añejo, produced in the Highland (Los Altos) region of Jalisco from Blue Weber agave with two full decades of barrel maturation.
The tequila category is defined by its youth: Blanco is unaged, Reposado is 2–11 months, Añejo is 1–3 years, and Extra Añejo begins at 3 years. Most Extra Añejos are released at 5–8 years. A 20-year extra añejo is so far beyond standard production parameters that it occupies a different category entirely — more analogous to aged cognac or ultra-aged whiskey than to conventional tequila.
At 20 years, the agave spirit has undergone extraordinary transformation: the fresh, vegetal, and herbal character of young tequila is essentially gone, replaced by the deep dried fruit, leather, caramel, and vanilla that two decades of American or French oak impart. Highland Jalisco agave — with its naturally sweeter, more floral character from the region's volcanic clay soil and higher altitude — provides the ideal base for this extreme aging, producing a spirit where both the terroir and the barrel make equal contributions to an extraordinarily complex final expression.
