High West Distillery, located in Park City, Utah, proudly presents Double Rye as one of its flagship expressions. This exceptional blend combines two distinct rye whiskies: a younger, high-rye variant with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley malt, and a more mature "barely legal" rye featuring 53% rye, 37% corn, and a touch of an undisclosed grain. According to High West, the additional aging and corn content in the older component contribute a sweetness that harmoniously balances the bold character of the younger rye.

Tasting Notes

Nose: The aroma is captivating, offering a fresh pine essence complemented by eucalyptus, juniper, grass, aniseed, and menthol. These notes are supported by classic spicy, oaky, and cereal rye characteristics, with subtle hints of fudge and vanilla. Some reviewers also detect delightful accents of maple and candied cherries, rounded out by traces of iodine and pine.

Palate: On the palate, the flavors coalesce into a profile reminiscent of southern sweet black tea infused with herbal anise. Gentle nuances of oak, cinnamon, clove, and mint are present, with prominent notes of honey, dill, and anise—signature elements of a high-rye whiskey. Unique botanical and gin-like qualities emerge, setting this rye apart as one of the more distinctive expressions available. It delivers the expected rye spice but with minimal burn, allowing the true flavors to shine.

Finish: The finish is a harmonious interplay of sweet and bitter, featuring honey, licorice, oak, dark chocolate, and vegetal hints of rosemary and mint. This lingering conclusion evolves into deeper notes of oak, chocolate, licorice, cinnamon, and mint, evoking the richness of sweet tea brewed with extra tea bags.
