Family Reserve Old Rum starts from the exact same closely-guarded recipe as Goslings' flagship Black Seal, just aged dramatically longer — RumX lists it with a 16-year age statement, resting in charred ex-bourbon casks the whole time. As with several other Goslings expressions, transparency here is genuinely limited: German labeling law requires disclosure of artificial coloring, and one reviewer confirmed via Goslings' own Frankfurt Duty Free listing that E150a caramel color is indeed added for consistency, alongside the same sugar additions found in standard Black Seal. That said, most tasters have been won over by what's in the glass. Christopher Null at Drinkhacker called it a genuine powerhouse, with dark chocolate, smoldering wood, molasses, and honeycomb, "easy to sip yet devilish." Gear Patrol found a surprisingly complex, cream-and-caramel richness up front giving way to a long, smooth, devilishly persistent finish, with real oak and spice revealing themselves as the age shows through.
