McKenzie Bourbon is created by Finger Lakes Distilling, located on the shores of Seneca Lake in Upstate New York. Their whiskies are handmade and use a variety of corn that is locally produced for 70% of the mash bill. They have two mashbills they use - a rye and a wheated. This is the latter, where in addition to the local corn there is 20% red winter wheat and 10% malted barley in the mash, all from local sources. This whiskey was aged for a little over 6 years in a new american oak barrel with a char level 4 and bottled at 105.8 proof. Notes of cherry cola and butterscotch come through on the nose, in addition to a nice bit of smoke. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and well-balanced, with a surprising correspondence to the notes on the nose and an additional pinch of brown sugar and cocoa powder. The finish is warming with hints of smoke and pears and spiced cake.
