Powerful and structured, but also blessed with a ton of Amalfi lemon and dried pear character. This is a very strong 2021 dry Pfalz riesling that’s been built for the long term and will repay any and all the patience you put into maturing it. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Wachenheimer Rechbächel P.C. Monopole offers naked terroir features on the complex and coolish nose that comes along pure, fresh, saline and stony, intermingling iodine and gravelly notes with lemon juice and marjoram aromas. Stunningly rich and intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and even powerful yet not alcoholic Rechbächel with remarkable finesse. The youthful phenolics have still to be integrated, but in five years or so, this should be a thrilling Riesling classic. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. Tasted in November 2022.

This white is very tight today, with intense acidity that should keep you from enjoying it in the near future. However, if you can get past that, it delivers a fruity aroma, with flavors of fresh-cut apple and baked pear. Notes of gingerbread lead to a taut finish that offers pastry and white chocolate accents. Best after 2027.

Winemaker Notes

The monopole Premier cru Rechbächel is widely regarded as the noblest “premier cru” of Wachenheim. In fact, only a sweet spot one third of the vineard is bottled for the premier cru, with the rest going into the ortswein (villages) level bottling.
