The Criollo '98 tobacco designation refers to seed stock originating from Cuba's most prized growing region — grown outside Cuba to replicate the leaf character in a different soil and climate. Mao, in the Valverde province of the Dominican Republic, provides a distinct terroir that produces a different expression of the seed than either Cuban-grown or other Dominican tobacco.
