Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2012

Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky | 50% ABV (100 Proof) | 2012 Vintage | Heavily Peated

Process & Profile

This expression, part of Bruichladdich’s Cask Exploration Series (SC:01), is the first to use 100% Islay-grown barley, celebrating local terroir. The spirit ages entirely on Islay in a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels (75%) and second-fill wine casks (25%). Heavily peated (around 40 ppm), it's unchill filtered, naturally colored, and bottled using Islay spring water. ([turn0search4], [turn0search5], [turn0search12])

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Fresh linen, sea breeze, zesty lemon, green fruit, crunchy pears; followed by floral geranium, gooseberry, coconut-dipped chocolate, muddy peat smoke, burnt heather, peach skin, vanilla, and toasted malt. ([turn0search9], [turn0search14])

  • Palate: Silky sweet honey, vanilla, milk chocolate, cedar, black pepper, warmed scone, apricot, earthy smoke, mint, and faint salty sand.

  • Finish: Coconut and peat smoke linger with mild iodine, almond, and geranium notes. ([turn0search14])

What Makes It Special

  • Made entirely with Islay-grown barley and fully matured on Islay, highlighting local ingredients and craft.

  • Represents Bruichladdich’s commitment to provenance and innovation within heavily peated whisky tradition. (Wikipedia)

  • A highly collectible and uniquely smooth yet smoky expression in Port Charlotte’s range.

How to Enjoy

Best served neat to fully appreciate the layered complexity. A drop of water can release additional floral and fruit dimensions. Ideal with smoked salmon, brie, or rich, spicy meals.
