Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 14.2 is the wine cask and French oak expression in the Octomore 14th annual series — a 5-year-old Islay single malt peated to 129.7 PPM, matured in Oloroso sherry casks and Amarone wine casks from Spain and Italy respectively, with French oak adding remarkable depth and complexity, bottled at 56.6% ABV.
The 14.2 is the series’ experimental cask exploration — oscillating from the 14.1’s first-fill American whiskey cask control by introducing two European wine cask types. Oloroso sherry casks from Spain (known for their robust, savory character and enhancement of Octomore’s signature peat smoke) and Amarone casks from Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy (carrying rich, dense red fruit, structure, and cohesion from one of Italy’s most concentrated wine styles) are combined with French oak maturation for additional depth and complexity. The result at 129.7 PPM and 56.6% ABV is a fundamentally different expression from 14.1 despite sharing the same peat level and distillation vintage. Amarone della Valpolicella is one of Italy’s most concentrated red wines — produced from partially dried Corvina and Rondinella grapes in the Veneto region, resulting in a dense, full-bodied wine with rich dark fruit, chocolate, and tobacco character. Amarone casks carry this dense, concentrated Italian red wine character directly into the Octomore peat base, adding a red fruit richness distinctly different from both Oloroso sherry and French wine casks.
