History
BOLS Elderflower Liqueur was crafted by the Bols family who started the production of liqueurs in a small Amsterdam distillery called 't Lootsje. Lucas Bols, the grandson of the founder, was born in 1669, and in 1700, he became a major shareholder in the Dutch East India trading company, gaining access to exotic herbs and spices. This opportunity enabled him to create over 300 liqueur and spirit recipes, shipping Bols liqueurs globally. Lucas Bols died in 1719, leaving a legacy that thrives today. The family also distilled famous Dutch genever, and Bols's innovative recipes, particularly the aged genevers matured in French Limousin oak casks, played a pivotal role in the cocktail renaissance. In 1862, bartender Jerry Thomas featured genever in one out of every four cocktails in his recipe book. The Bols Genever Barrel Aged recipe, inspired by this tradition, was relaunched internationally in 2010, further cementing the brand's influence in the world of spirits.
