Legend states that he modeled Liberty after his daughter Sarah wearing a headdress of an Indian Chief who visited the mint. No one knows if Sarah was the model as James B. Longacre once stated Venus, a Greek statue, was his inspiration for the design. The Indian Head Cent was minted from 1859 to 1909. Mint marks and years will vary.
