I love a wine with a little bit of history to it. Don't get me wrong, the new world has a lot to offer but there's something magical about knowing that what's in your glass has been poured for centuries.

Cut to Italy's Alto Adige region where a 900 year old monastery makes a fantastic white wine with a pedigree that will impress any history buff. Abbazia di Novacella was founded in 1142 and the vineyards on the property produce a white wine called Kerner. It's a lesser known varietal that's a hybrid of Riesling and Schiava Grossa with the best qualities of both grapes, and named after a writer who penned a lot of poetry about (what else) wine!

With a beautiful palate of melon, apple and delicate pear and a fresh zip of citrus, it's balanced by a lovely minerality on the finish. This wine could not be more perfect for pairing with a summer salad or a roast chicken but it would also shine on its own. It's a medium bodied wine but it's got a wonderful depth of flavor.
